Skin & Tonic: British, Organic, Sustainable Skincare

As the weather starts to get colder, it's important to ensure your skin is well nourished and moisturised. We absolutely love the products from London based skincare brand Skin & Tonic. They create minimal, multi-functional skincare by using carefully sourced, highly therapeutic organic ingredients. Skin & Tonic passionately believe that less is more when it comes to your skin. Each and every product is certified organic by the Soil Association and crafted in their Hackney workshop by people - not machines.

We caught up with co-founder Sarah Hancock to find out more about her inspirational company:

What inspired you to start Skin & Tonic?

In 2010, I was diagnosed with endometriosis - a disorder that affects the fertility of 1 in 10 women in the UK. It was a tough time for me, both emotionally and physically. Getting sick made me realize that I needed to simplify my lifestyle and start paying more attention to what I was putting into AND onto my body: I soon discovered that much of the skincare I was using was full of carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting synthetic chemicals. The skincare market was full of ‘natural’ claims but there wasn’t much transparency or honesty and that bugged me. So, I quit my job in television and retrained in aromatherapy and skincare formulation. Last summer, Josh (my boyfriend and partner in crime) joined forces with me and we launched Skin & Tonic in September.

Why is it so important to use organic, simple ingredients?

We decided that our products should be organic so that we could guarantee absolute purity in our formulations. Our ingredients are grown without pesticides and toxins and are highly effective and therapeutic because they are not diluted with cheap fillers, harsh preservative or surfactants. We use organic plant oils, powders and butters in their raw form, which means they retain valuable nutrients that your skin needs for healthy cellular function. Skin & Tonic products are highly concentrated and packed full of antioxidants and omegas, helping your skin fight the free radicals we all come up against in day-to-day life.

Where do you source your ingredients?

Wherever possible, we source our beautiful organic ingredients from small producers in the UK & France. We are a British brand and are therefore committed to working with some of the amazing local ingredients available in this country, such as: Borage, Thistle, Mallow, Calendula, Chamomile and Lavender. There are certain ingredients that we can’t source locally, like Coconut Oil or Shea Nut Butter, we source these from two Fairtrade Womens’ Co-Operatives in Ghana and Sri Lanka.
