Rude Health London Porridge Championships

Last Friday, we were honoured to take part in the annual London Porridge Championships, hosted by Rude Health at Whole Foods Market in High Street Kensington. 

Porridge fanatics from all across London - home cooks, restaurants, street food stalls and fellow healthy food brands, came together to celebrate the classic breakfast dish and share their favourite recipes. 

Frances Quinn, winner of the Great British Bake Off 2013 (who admitted she likes porridge more than cake!) and Rude Health's very own Nick Barnard, Speciality Champion at the 2013 World Porridge Championships, had the difficult task of deciding on the champion - who would take away the much sought-after porridge bowl and hamper full of breakfast goodies.

Who knew porridge could provoke so much debate and just how many variations were possible! No two bowls were alike, with entries ranging from the very minimalist - porridge cooked in water and served with just salt and cream to the elaborately adorned with homemade compotes, syrups, foraged fruit, nuts, seeds and more.

There was even a fully raw porridge by Nama Foods and a few savoury porridges in the mix - including 2nd place champion, Weligama with their Sri Lankan-inspired dish with green herbs, jaggery & fennel seed. 

We cooked up a Moringa & Mint Choc Chip Super Bowl - a creamy bowl of moringa goodness blended with the classic flavour combination of mint and chocolate. We didn't win but we got some great feedback from the judges, and most importantly, had a lot of fun. It was great to have a public audience there cheering us on and we were very impressed with how they all still managed to look enthusiastic about porridge, even after tasting their 20th bowl of the morning!
