Cacao sits within a vast global chocolate industry, yet much of its journey from bean to powder lacks transparency. While over 60% of the world's cocoa is grown in West Africa — primarily Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire — most value-added processing takes place elsewhere, limiting traceability and local economic benefit.

Most cocoa on the market is "bulk" grade: high-volume beans blended across origins and processed into standardised powders. This model prioritises scale and consistency but sacrifices provenance, flavour complexity and supply chain visibility.

At Aduna, we take a different approach. We have worked for over ten years with a long-term partner in Ghana, sourcing single-origin cacao that is grown, harvested and processed locally before export. This ensures full traceability, supports local value creation and maintains tighter quality control.

Processing method is critical. Many conventional cocoa powders are alkalised — a chemical treatment that alters flavour and colour but significantly reduces flavanol content. Flavanols are the naturally occurring compounds linked to cardiovascular health, supporting normal blood flow. Our cacao is never alkalised. It is minimally processed to preserve its natural flavanols and nutritional integrity. We verify this through specialist laboratory testing to ensure consistent flavanol levels.

Safety is equally important. Cacao can contain heavy metals due to soil conditions, particularly cadmium in some regions. We rigorously test all batches and our Ghanaian cacao consistently shows very low levels, well within regulatory limits.
