Wild Food Café: Raw Food heaven
“Wild Food Café is here to promote aliveness and embody the world in which plant-passionate, nutrient-packed food prepared and served with devotion and love is not only possible – it is necessary!” With a mission like this, its no wonder Wild Food Café has become a firm favourite on the healthy eating scene. Looking for the perfect remedy to squash the January blues and put the skip back into our step, we took a trip to Covent Garden to delve behind the raw food hype.
The brightly coloured walls and leafy exteriors of Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden, home to the Wild Food Café, is an oasis of calm compared to the hectic bustle of West End tourists. Situated on the first floor, the café has at its heart an open plan kitchen bursting with vibrant fruit and vegetables. The owners, Joel and Aiste, pride themselves on sourcing their ingredients from independent suppliers and organic producers to create the best and freshest of plant-based cuisine. Their dedication to wild and nutrient-packed food means their menu is bursting with delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes that not only look beautiful but are packed with flavour too. And as they are full of nuts, seeds, sprouted grains and raw vegetables, they leave you feeling nice and full too. The only problem is deciding which meal you want, as each sound (and taste) as tempting as the next. Our favourites were the pistachio falafel balls, a raw dairy-free pizza and their famous raw veggie burger which they claim (and we agree) is the ‘best in town’.
If that doesn’t entice you, wait until you hear about the desserts! Raw chocolate tarts, baked banana bread, peanut butter cookies and a specials board that’s always changing. After much deliberation we went with a raw chocolate and orange tart that was delicious and, unlike normal sugar-laden desserts, full of nutritious ingredients. The combination of raw chocolate mousse, cacao nibs and a zesty orange ripple resulted in a chocolate orange explosion perfect for any self-confessed sweet tooth. Move over Terry's and your orange!
We left Neal’s Yard feeling satisfyingly full but full of energy, and ready to take on the rest of the day!
